Digital Editions of IMO News Available

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) made available on its website the latest two editions of its IMO News magazine. The June issue’s cover story discusses the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) and how industry stakeholders are beginning to utilize and refine this concept. IMO has long been a leader in promoting fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas reduction. EEDI was made mandatory in July of this year for all new ships. The related Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) for currently existing ship was adopted by IMO at the same time.

The September issue is devoted to World Maritime Day 2011 and this year’s theme–Piracy: Orchestrating the Response. World Maritime Day activities will take place the week of 26-30 September with World Maritime Day celebrated on 29 September. This year’s parallel event will be hosted in Rome, Italy, 13-14 October. The agenda for the parallel event can be found here.

June 2010 – Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP)

June 10, 2010 — SMSLLC Principal Roger Miller is leading development of the firm’s expertise and approaches to assisting clients in the development of Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plans (SEEMP) per IMO guidelines (MEPC.1/Circ.683).

SMSLLC has been involved with client environmental compliance and improvement programs for many years and views the SEEMP as an opportunity for owners to achieve a quantifiable return on investment. “We’ve seen a fairly dramatic shift in the industry towards ISO 14001 certification over recent years, though frequently owners and managers complain that they aren’t achieving a measurable financial benefit. By focusing on measures to improve energy efficiency through schedule optimization, routing and other means, these same companies will finally see a difference to their bottom line.”

SMSLLC intends to provide SEEMP advisory and development services to its clients during 2010 and expects greater interest from ship managers seeking to optimize their environmental management systems.
